International malting company Boortmalt has opened the world's largest kiln after completing the expansion of its Buckie malting plant on the Morayshire coast. Boortmalt, headquartered in Bury St Edmund, East Anglia, has been processing malt in Buckie since 1974. It currently employs 24 people and most of its processed malt is shipped to Sri Lanka. One of the UK's oldest malting companies, Boortmalt built the new malting oven and expanded its supporting building by 1,800 square metres to meet the growing demand for malt in the whisky industry worldwide.
In addition to the new 41-meter-diameter wheat oven, which can process 600 tons of malt per batch, it also uses a new combustion technology designed to improve energy efficiency.
Boortmalt's expansion project was completed within 12 months of construction, and malt production has doubled to about 90,000 tons per year. In the future, Boortmalt will also buy more barley in northern parts of Scotland to support farmers in these areas.
Yvan Schaepman, CEO of Boortmalt Group, said: "We are very confident in the future of the malting industry, and in less than 12 months, our employees at Buckie have built the world's largest wheat oven. This expansion will allow us to better meet the growing needs of our customer base."
Charles Tozer, general manager of Boortmalt UK and Ireland, added: "We are proud to offer distilleries and liquor brands the malt that best suits their style."
